LG presents ‘Media art; reinterpreted time’, showcasing LG OLED Art, which reinterprets the concept of time in contemporary art through newly commissioned works by emerging artists. Each represents different core themes embedded within time; resistance, infinity, mortality and nature. The emerging artists include Luke Stephenson, JEBAAK and Ruofan Chen.

Breathing new life into digital art, Media art; reinterpreted time will display works created by a a group of international artists, including Ruofan Chen, JEBAAK and Luke Stephenson. Recognised for his collaboration with fashion designer Dries Van Noten, British photographer Luke Stephenson will present a series of playful artworks portraying birds, drawing on his lifelong obsession with the species. Alongside Stephenson’s works, Media art; reinterpreted time will show a selection of video installations by JEBAAK, a Korean artist, whose practice focuses on Zen Buddhism. Using data from Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, JEBAAK created Morpho Luna: data-based artworks exploring energy flows and human spirituality. Also featured in the exhibition, Ruofan Chen will showcase a selection of works comprised from dog hair and tree trunks, drawing on the significance of creating emotional connections with the natural world.

LG’s OLED technology utilises pixels that turn on and off individually (‘self-lit’) to achieve immaculate colour reproduction and infinite contrast, resulting in exceptionally lifelike colours as well as deep blacks and a contrast ratio that maximizes immersion and realism. The OLED technology utilised to display these works creates a unique visual experience.

The exhibition at Saatchi Gallery has been curated by Jason Kim of BESIGN and will be presented within an immersive temporary architectural structure, inspired by Venetian palazzos and created by London-based designer Je-Uk Kim of JiB design studio. Media art; reinterpreted time is the next step in LG’s series of artistic programming, following a recent partnership with Frieze London. With the recently announced Seoul’s plan for a metaverse platform, LG is planning to join the augmented reality in the near future.

To mark the launch of Halo Infinite, the latest installment in the iconic video game franchise, an original epic, large-scale oil painting is on view in Gallery 4. Created by Iva Troj, the Brighton-based 2016 Palm Award Winner and 2019 CAF Artist Of The Year, the 6m x 3m canvas depicts in minute detail a scene inspired by Halo Infinite. The scene shows franchise protagonist, The Master Chief, locked in battle with his alien enemy: the spark of rebellion in the center of the painting ignites scores of battles nearby, as the Chief inspires the marines around him to become heroes.
The work was created in Troj’s Brighton studio using oil on canvas, with details and techniques that Troj is known for in her original works, which typically blend Renaissance and postmodern styles giving a dreamlike feel. Titled the ‘Master Piece”, playing on Halo’s lead character’s name, the piece elevates a decades-old cultural icon from pop culture to high culture, blending Renaissance art with cutting edge entertainment and reminding fans and new audiences alike that videogames are, indeed, works of art. “I was challenged to create a work in my own style, which typically has a dreamlike and sometimes fantastical quality, but ensuring that it’s instantly recognisable as Halo,” said artist Iva Troj. “I consequently spent a long time immersing myself in Halo’s universe to bring this to life in the manner of an old master but depicting a modern battle, and I hope Halo fans and gamers everywhere enjoy the results – including those smaller Easter eggs that you might not notice at first glance. A rare combination of digital and traditional painting skills was required, as I worked alongside the 343 Industries development team; the painting was completed in just over a month.”

The public can view the painting for free at Saatchi Gallery, as well as at the world-renowned Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, where a smaller replica will be on display until December 19

Oxford Circus also saw a Halo Infinite themed takeover with a stunning projection mapped onto the Microsoft Experience Centre facade in which a Warthog, the famous transport from the Halo games, is air-lifted to the ground in front of the iconic Halo ring.

“It’s fantastic to see London coming alive as part of the huge global launch for Halo Infinite,” said Joseph Staten, Head of Creative at Halo developer 343 Industries. “We’re so excited to get this game in the hands of our players – both those that have been with us since the beginning as well as newer gamers – all ready to jump into an epic sci-fi universe and experience our most adventure-filled Halo game yet.”

“Xbox and Halo both turned 20 last month and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate that than with such unique activities, giving our fans and the public a chance to see something special,” said James Butcher, Head of Xbox UK & Ireland. “They are a fitting way to conclude what has been a string of successful AAA game releases over recent weeks.” ‘Master Piece’ is available to view now for free at Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea; the public can find the piece in Gallery 4.

About

The Thousand Year Kingdom is the first solo museum exhibition in London of work by artist, writer and curator Cedar Lewisohn.

The Thousand Year Kingdom features a series of large scale woodblock prints primarily made throughout 2013; a group of works that have not previously been shown together. These prints combine images relating to African and Mesopotamian objects from museum collections in the UK and Europe with recognisable details and depictions of contemporary life. The works are the antecedent to much of the visual language that Lewisohn’s current practice focuses on.

The brutal yet delicate method of production plays with the idea of “primitivism” and the connotations of labelling artworks as primitive. In these works, images are repeated, and new contexts and meanings are created with the addition or subtraction of colours or abstract landscapes. These repetitions play with the medium of printing, and the ways in which the viewer receives and processes visual information.

The exhibition includes a selection of prints from Lewisohn’s acclaimed comic book The Marduk Prophecy published in 2020. Produced from handmade woodcuts and Lino prints, the images portray objects found in the British Museum – whose Benin Bronzes were looted and whose ownership is contested – as well as other museums such as the Pitt Rivers Museum and the Petrie Museum. These depictions of objects from ancient civilisations are mixed with symbols of the contemporary world that refer to youth culture in the UK, such as Drill Music creating an abstract narrative that references social, ethical and political issues.

On 4 November, in collaboration with HERVISIONS and 50 of the UK’s most exciting creators, Instagram will unveil a first of its kind digital celebration of British youth culture at London’s Saatchi Gallery. It will bring to life the cultural diversity and lived-experience of British Gen Z today, as expressed on Instagram Reels.

The motion art installation, called ‘Yours to Make: Fluid Imaginarium’, has been produced using gaming technology and is an experimental artwork reflecting the fluidity of British youth. The viewer is taken through various immersive dimensions that follow the different guises of youth self-expression.

The 50 creators including @elliejg16_zebedeemodel – the first model with Down’s Syndrome to work for a major fashion house, beauty creator @pradaolic, Drag Race UK star and drag artist @krystalversace, comedian @akafiali and author and broadcaster @Jamie_Windust worked with HERVISIONS to create the artwork by sharing how they explore their identity.

Zaiba Jabbar, founder of HERVISIONS, says:
“More than any generation before, British Generation Z have unlimited access to information. This has created a constant state of open-mindedness and change. They are fluid; in a state of creative self-evolution and always connected with the world.”

My work with Instagram celebrates this exciting approach to self-exploration, specifically the way in which Gen Z use the platform to create communities and explore who they can be. Myself and the HERVISIONS team have been inspired by the Instagram Reels that create the foundations of the artwork; the breadth of creativity and methods of which it’s expressed.”

From an open call across the UK, we provide a platform for ten finalists whose work demonstrates a strong and original voice and is of exceptional artistic quality. And now, more than ever, when so many people have had a rare opportunity to step into and act on their genuine passions – such as the arts – I feel proud that we are able to champion such inspiring work in the hope of launching careers from the next generation of exceptional artists.”, Robert Walters, CEO of Robert Walters Group

Turkish Art Week (TAW) was created by Renko London, a British-based art gallery and events company, to give an international platform to Turkish contemporary artists, whose far-reaching influence should be recognised on an international level. TAW is holding TA London, its first exhibition, at Saatchi Gallery, a venue synonymous with innovation and championing artistic opportunity.

This inaugural exhibition brings together acclaimed Turkish contemporary artists from across the globe to showcase the breadth of their ground-breaking talent. TA London will represent 21 internationally acclaimed artists from mainland Turkey, Cyprus, Azerbaijan, London and other European communities. From pop art to lyric abstraction, the exhibit includes work from a variety of contemporary art movements, techniques and disciplines.

Headlining the exhibit is one of Turkey’s most established artists, Devrim Erbil. Known as the “Poet of Painting” and the recipient of the Presidential Culture and Arts Grants award, he is a pioneer for international contemporary art, while also paying homage to his Anatolian history.

In a series of firsts, Devrim will be auctioning his first ever NFT (non-Fungible Token) painting, a work called ‘London’, in real time during the exhibition. There are few established artists, especially distinguished art masters involved on NFT platforms and very few NFT auctions take place in conjunction with a physical exhibition. Bringing the gravitas, authenticity and innovative eye of a world-renowned art master to the virtual art market will forge important new pathways for this fledgling art scene.

Devrim believes it is vital to introduce Turkish art to international audiences and he created ‘London’ specially to celebrate this exhibition, turning his signature bird’s eye view, so famous in his landmark Istanbul series, on the London skyline. Visitors can view the original painting before it goes under the virtual hammer hosted by online auction platform, Nifty Gateway with curation supported by NFT Consultancy Fanchain.

It is also the first time that virtual artist Yam Karkai will exhibit in ‘real-life’ her NFT series, “Women by Yam – Females in the Spotlight”. Yam is passionate about bringing more diversity into this sector, an aim shared by TA London’s creators Renko London who hope the exhibition will bring together communities and inspire cross-cultural art conversations.

With this aim in mind, TA London invited two international guest artists from London’s diverse community to celebrate the capital’s dynamic multicultural scene and to foster links. Eva Sonaike’s tapestries are a blend of her Nigerian traditional heritage and contemporary European life, while London artist Joanna Gilbert reflects her links to different urban centres in her abstracts and installations.

Talking, exhibiting and exploring together brings new visions and experiences that will energise the arts and benefit everyone. That’s why the name is an expression of gratitude. So, it’s “mersi” from Turkey and “ta” from London.

Coinciding with the return of the RHS Botanical Art & Photography Show 2021 from September 18 through to October 3, 2021, Saatchi Gallery is participating in the RHS Chelsea Flower Show featuring new works by British contemporary artist Dan Rawlings.

The installation at the weeklong show features new artworks by the artist set out to spark a dialogue about our interaction with nature and our dependency on industry including: ‘Delays Expected’ (2021), a steel forest shell hand cut into the walls of a repurposed transit van.

Set at the heart of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (stand number RHW281), the steel structures demonstrate Rawlings’ fascination with the resilience of nature with the ‘deserted’ vehicle swamped and almost overcome by the plants and foliage of the surrounding garden. Rawlings’ intricate hand cut process is created using a plasma cutter, a handheld torch that combines electricity and compressed air to cut through metal. Finer details are added with a variety of other specialised tools, guided by Rawlings’ preparatory painted sketches. The vehicle’s structure will be illuminated using hidden LED lights and will be lit deliberately at random – as if left wild, and free of human control. The garden will also be surrounded by reshaped traffic lights and roadworks signage resembling Rawlings’ steel cut foliage motif.

“We hear the phrases ‘net zero’ and ‘emissions targets’ daily, and it’s easy to tell ourselves that our problems are being dealt with, that we are on a smooth road out of environmental catastrophe. We can be diligent with our recycling, carbon offsets and reusable shopping bags, but these efforts are not enough, and the reality is that we are patching a potholed road. Traffic lights and roadworks interrupt the flower show, and weeds interrupt the roadworks. ‘Delays Expected’ is a utopian Atlantis – the spectre of a world that could be free.”
– British artist, Dan Rawlings

The installation will be on view at stand number RHW281, located on the major show thoroughfare Royal Hospital Way. Tickets are still available & can be purchased here:

Dan Rawlings is a contemporary British artist born in Watford in 1979. He is known for his large-scale installations and intricate plasma-cut metal works. A sympathy for discarded objects and an admiration for nature’s resilience inspire him to create visions of a future where man’s impact is slowly reclaimed by nature. Notable recent projects include: ‘Future Returns’, a plasma-cut reclaimed oil tanker housed inside a 19thcentury church in Lincolnshire’s 20-21 Art centre, and ‘Short Haul’, an elaborately hand cut light aircraft shown at the Urban Nation Museum in Berlin during the 2019 Biennale. www.everyact.co.uk
